Sunday Funday

Hi guys! Hope you’re having a fun weekend! We’re back at low tide again and boy was it a blast!

With the weather warming up a bit, the humoms want to take us out here as much as possible! There’s so much more running space out here, it seems endless!

With long legs like mine, I need to RUN RUN RUN!!!

My humom still has to watch out for Mia though, we recently found out that she’s got mild elbow and hip dysplasia so humom limits the amount of running she gets to do. That’s why you always see Mia with her ball. As long as Mia has her ball she’s happy! She’s always in her own little world when it comes to balls! BOL!

Wilhelmina also likes balls! She found one while we were out on low tide!

She likes to tease us with it to get us to chase her!

And of course, we can never forget about Duffy! He may be little but he can still run with the big girls!

The humoms failed at getting an obligatory posed photo with all of us looking at the camera. Don’t they know by now it’s an impossible mission, especially when we’re out on low tide??? Sheesh. They’re always so hopeful BOL!

Oops! We’re missing Duffy!

Now we’re missing Avalon! Where did she go??

Oh well this will have to do! Now time to play!

Hope you guys enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

Happy Easter!

Hi Friends! Hope everyone is having a great Easter weekend! We’ve been having too much fun these past couple of weeks that we’ve been missing in action here in Blogville! We’ve got so much to share with you, stay tuned!

In the meantime, Happy Easter!

Mia: Is the humiliation over yet???

Nymeria: I don’t know what Mia is complaining about…Easter is delicious!

Avalon: I agree with Mia, this is humiliating!

Avalon: I’m so over it!; Nymeria: Nom nom nom…

World Sleep Day!

Hey Everyone! Apologies again, we have been missing in action…again…I have been dealing with some issues with my leg and we had to go back to the vet.

We got some x-rays done and my humom will be getting a call from the vet today or tomorrow. I guess for the next couple of weeks we will be laying low. I won’t be able to do the things I love for a while…like running on the beach, exploring the forest or my favorite: playing fetch!

I guess it’s fitting that today is World Sleep Day! It’s time to sleep and recover! Happy sleeping everyone!

Throwback Thursday – Christmas Holidays

Since it’s Thursday, I thought I should throw it back to the holidays and share a bit of what we did!

This was our Christmas tree! It was my very first Christmas tree! (We didn’t have one last year because I was too scared of them).

190CE94A-DD33-4684-8BB6-14AEBBCA11F6

This year though, we had a couple of very special decorations. Instead of putting a star on top, my humom put a beautiful little snow owl in memory of my Angel brother Keiko.

She also got a special Christmas ornament with his name on it.

I supervised the whole thing, making sure all the decorations were in the right place. I had to take a nap afterwards, it’s very tiring being a supervisor!

The best part of the holidays is when my FAVORITE AUNTIE IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD comes to visit! She’s my humom’s younger sister. I did an intro post about her last year, you can read it here.

We always have so much fun together, this one time she took me to the beach to play fetch! If you missed that post, you can read it here!

I love sitting on Auntie’s lap! (I’m in denial that I’m too big to be a lap dog)

When she visits, she always stays at the parents’ house. I wish she could stay with us but our apartment isn’t big enough. My humom’s parents’ house is REALLY BIG! but…us dogs are only allowed in the kitchen.

This would be the first time Nymeria would meet my humom’s whole family. She even met my humom’s brother, wife and son! They were visiting from Hawaii and my humom said she did very well. She was a little nervous but she sat quietly behind Humom. Unfortunately we didn’t get any photos, Humom forgot to take some!

While the humans were waiting for the food to be ready, I was watching my Auntie make this little fluffy ball thingy for her dad’s knitted hat (she knitted him a hat for Christmas!) I thought it was a toy so I kept staring at it, waiting for Auntie to give it to me. I think she called it a “pom-pom” or something. She ended making me one but it didn’t last very long…

Nymeria whined a little bit throughout the night, but I tried to comfort her like a good big sister! Humom was very proud of me. 🙂

Eventually she was able to relax and took a nap while the humans were eating.

After dinner, my humom’s dad took out this weird contraption called a “oo-ka-lee-lee”. It plays music when you touch the strings.

My Auntie serenaded me with it later on in the night!

As you can see I enjoyed it very much!

My humom knew that it was time to go home when I jumped into her lap to sleep.

I can’t wait until my Auntie comes back to visit! I think my humom said she will be back during broken Spring? I don’t really know what that means…how do you break Spring? Something about my Auntie not having to go to class for a week so she’s going to come home to celebrate my humom’s birthday!

Happy Thursday everyone!

Día Del Galgo – World Galgo Day

Hi Everyone! Nymeria here.

I’m taking over the blog today to talk about a very special day today. It’s Día Del Galgo or World Galgo Day! Though Galgos (and Podencos) need help all year round, February 1 was chosen as the day to unite people to help bring awareness to our plight. This is the official website if you would like more information: www.diadelgalgo.com

The galgo is an ancient breed, originally brought to Spain by noblepersons and was held in high esteem.  After years and years of theft and breeding by the lower class, the galgo became viewed as a “trash dog” and only owned by the lower classes. The galgo was bred for hunting (hare) and coursing. They spend their lives in damp, tiny dirty holes or windowless shacks until they are needed to hunt. They are typically fed only water and bread, it is believed that they hunt better when starving. They are deprived of any human affection because it is believed to harm their hunting abilities. Unfortunately, once the hunting season is over, the Galgueros (galgo handlers) deem the galgos worthless or too costly to maintain. It is cheaper for them to buy new dogs than to feed the old ones.  Many are killed in a variety of inhuman ways. The “lucky ones” are dumped at the shelter while others are shot, poisoned, drowned, hanged or even burned to death.

It’s been an ongoing fight to stop the hunting in Spain and unfortunately thousands of Galgos and Podencos are still being killed, tortured and abandoned every year. The number is estimated to be 150,000.

Rescues like Scooby Medina, Galgo Del Sol, Ibizan Hound Rescue, Galgos en Familia and many others are filling up with thousands of puppies, adults and seniors, all trying to find them forever homes. They are always in need of donations and foster homes.

My fellow galga Avalon and myself have been fortunate enough to find loving homes here in Canada. Avalon was rescued by the lovely people of Ibizan Hound Rescue.

Isn’t she the cutest puppy you have ever seen?? Just look at that sweet face! You never know it just by looking at her but she’s a very mischievous little girl!

I was rescued by Scooby Medina.

I was found with a male black Galgo named Timon. They’re not sure if he was my dad but we were very attached to one another. We both had very bad skin when we first arrived in the shelter. They gave me a tennis ball to help burn off my energy! All I wanted to do was play play play! Timon was very shy and weary of people. Eventually I was moved into another paddock with other puppies my age. Sadly he is still at the shelter. He has not been adopted yet 😦

I was a really tiny puppy! I’m definitely not that small anymore! BOL!

My humom thinks that I am a mix of a wired haired Podenco and a Galgo. I have the ears and hair of a Podenco but the brindle of a Galgo. Let’s not forget my long tail of mine! It’s measured at 22 inches!

Watching the sunset with my buddy Duffy

Watching the airplanes fly by

I couldn’t have imagined living such a great life with my new family and having such great friends!

Mia and I got off to a rocky start but we’re really bonding now!

We both share a dislike for picture taking when we are trying to nap!

We both love a good run in the forest and a post powernap in the car!

Gobby face! Following in my sister’s footsteps! You’re not having enough fun until you’ve got gob all over your face! BOL!

We’re on the lookout!

Did I mention all the toys I get to play with?? This one is my favorite…it’s actually Mia’s but I stole it!

I’ll even put up with being dressed up! Mia doesn’t look too pleased. BOL! This was for Wilhelmina’s humoms birthday!

I really hope that one day all this terrible hunting will be banned in Spain and that all my galgo and podenco friends will be all free and living in wonderful loving forever homes. We have to keep fighting the fight and help all these rescues in any way we can!

A special thank you goes out to those who helped me and my family bring me here to Vancouver, BC. I am so thankful and appreciative to have such generous, caring people and dogs in my life!

New Toys and Friday Forest Fun!

Hi Friends! It’s finally Friday! How was everyone’s week?

We’re so happy that it’s FRI-YAY! That means our weekend adventures are about to start! We haven’t had the opportunity to show you all the Christmas loot we got this year (WE GOT A LOT!) but definitely our FAVORITE gifts was…

…NEW CHUCK-IT BALLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mom, stop taking pictures and throw the ball already! Look how nicely we are sitting and patiently waiting!

Wilhelmina’s Humom bought them for me! She knows how much I love to play fetch. And because I’m such a nice sister, I shared them with Nymeria too. (I should get some extra treats for that!)

My humom was very thankful for Wilhelmina’s humom for buying me these balls because I like to chew on them. Tennis balls aren’t very safe for pups like me because we can ingest those tiny yellow fibers and it’s not good for our tummies!

I love you, little blue ball. You are my best friend (after Wilhelmina of course!)

Nymeria is a very quick study. She’s already learned that she has to sit before our humom throws the ball. (In my case she makes me lie down because sometimes I get impatient and I jump up to grab it. That is a BIG no-no…humom gets super angry when we do that). Nymeria is also figuring out that she has to bring the ball back before the next one gets thrown.  She’s not always consistent but for 2 months being here, I’d say she’s doing really well!

Here’s a video!

Do you remember in my last post I mentioned that Nymeria was really fast? In fact, sometimes TOO fast for me? Well, when it comes to chasing balls, she’s got nothing on me! Sometimes I’ll give her a chance and let her have the ball 😉

Nymeria is trying to get the ball from my mouth! But I caught it first!

We’re ready for the next throw!

Just when we thought the fun was over, our Humom took us to the forest!!!!! We thought we were going home but nope, our humom thought we could run around in the forest a bit! I was soooooooooooo so so so EXCITED!!!!!

We haven’t been able to go to the forest as often as we used to because my humom is still working on Nymeria’s recall. Since she is still a little nervous with strangers, we tend to go to off leash areas during non-peak times. Today was one of those times so Nymeria got to explore off leash on the less busier trails! She was SO HAPPY! She was really good too, she stuck close to me and Humom and when she saw other strangers walking by she would just hide behind a tree and watch them go by and then come back out.

Certain areas my humom will put her on leash because she doesn’t want Nymeria to get startled and run off deep into the forest where we can’t find her. It’s hard to find a time when the forest isn’t busy because it’s a very popular place, I mean, who wouldn’t want to take a stroll in a beautiful forest surrounded by trees, birds and water?? So any time we do go into the forest, it’s a real treat!

We had so much fun exploring together! We got super wet and muddy! It was great!

Unfortunately…the muddier the adventure, the higher change of a….BATH!!!!

Hurry! Give your best puppy dog eyes Nymeria! This is our last chance to change her mind!

Telling by how dirty our collars were…chances were slim of getting out of a bath…

In the end, it was all worth it! Boy are we pooped!!! Time to rest up for our next adventure tomorrow!!!

Good night friends! Hope you have a great weekend!
